There is common ground between Shiatsu and Western massage. Both systems are wonderful ways of relieving stress and promoting health and they focus on the body of the person to be treated. Further, neither system uses any sophisticated electronic or mechanical machinery in the diagnosis or implementation of treatment. The third common ground is that both Shiatsu and massage are classified in most of the Western World to remain outside the bastion of Western medicine, which is based on current Western mainstream scientific tradition. Outside Japan both Shiatsu and Western massage share the outfields of non-traditional treatment or alternative medicine with Healing, Reiki, Hypnosis or Crystal Healing.

Shiatsu practitioners tend to distance themselves from the bandwagon of alternative treatment approaches like Reiki or faith healing by demonstrating their usage of anatomy, physiology and pathology in the same vein as Western medicine. This could be one of the explanations for the great popularity of Shiatsu in the West as it bridges the West and the East.

When we explore the differences between Shiatsu and Western massage, we notice four main differences.

The historical evolution of the treatments.
Technique used and ingredients in treatment.
The philosophy behind the approach and the essence, which every practitioner attempts to capture.
The nature of derivative systems that have emerged.

Body massage might be one of the oldest forms of medical care known to man. Though we may not know what the ancient Egyptian practitioners actually believed in, Egyptian tomb paintings show people being massaged. A Chinese book from 2,700 B.C., The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, recommends massage of skin and flesh as the appropriate treatment for many ailments. Ayurveda, the 5000-year old traditional Indian system of medicine, greatly stresses the therapeutic benefits of massage with aromatic oils and spices. Writing in the 8th century BC, Homer of Greece mentions massage being used commonly also for Olympic athletes in the same way as it is used today.

1. The History and Evolution of Shiatsu

Though the earliest modern reference to the term Shiatsu in a publication might be the 1915 Japanese book, Shiatsu Ry�h� written by Tenpaku Tamai, Tokujiro Namikoshi's (1905-2000) followers consider him to be the founder of Shiatsu. His approach was entirely different from the Chinese meridian or Qi-based therapies. Namikoshi at age seven in 1912 independently developed a technique of pressing with his thumbs and palms as he tried to nurse his mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Namikoshi's influence on Shiatsu can be compared to the role of Picasso in art because he not only created an important genre, but also became an inspiration for many other creators of derivative therapies.

Tokujiro Namikoshi opened his first clinic for Shiatsu Therapy in 1925 in Hokkaido using the system that he perfected. In addition to founding in 1940 the first school of Shiatsu Therapy in Tokyo (Now known as the Japan Shiatsu College), Namikoshi was involved with the legal recognition of Shiatsu in Japan, which may account for his emphasis on Western medical theories. Namikoshi achieved fame and successfully treated many high-ranking persons such as the former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida. As his fame spread foreign celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali sought his treatment. Currently in Japan, Namikoshi's system enjoys special legal status. Starting from 1947, after an eight-year clinical investigation period to ascertain which of 300 treatments could be legalised, the Ministry of Health of Japan acknowledged Shiatsu Therapy, as it proved effective. Shiatsu was placed in the same category with Anma and Western Massage in 1955.
In 1964 Shiatsu was acknowledged as a separate therapy on its own in Japan. Everyone practising Shiatsu in Japan should obtain a licence from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Licensing also requires that Shiatsu practitioners study a 2,500-hour educational program of Shiatsu therapy lasting about three years in the universities or colleges authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and pass the national exam.

2. Technique used and ingredients in treatment

The second difference between Shiatsu and Western massage is in technique and in the use of ingredients like oils and spices. Shiatsu technique relies on finger and palm pressure, while western massage uses a rubbing motion. Since shiatsu does not involve rubbing, no oil or lotion is ever used during a treatment.

3. Philosophy of Western Massage and Shiatsu

The third and main difference comes from the philosophy behind Western Massage and Shiatsu.

The principal difference between Shiatsu and other modern Western forms of bodywork, e.g., Swedish massage, is that Shiatsu is a form of holistic healing while modern Western massage is based on conventional Western views of wellness and healing. Western massage usually considers the human body the domain of the masseur while the mind is the domain of psychology and psychiatry. Adapting a holistic approach, Shiatsu regulates the nervous system and promotes natural healing by stimulating chemical responses in the body.

Western massage is based on the idea that muscle tension and improper alignment may cause or worsen physical, mental and internal imbalances. Massage techniques attempt to reduce tension within the body to facilitate the free flow of blood and energy. This in turn makes the major systems of the body (immune, circulatory, nervous, etc.) to be better able to naturally heal disease and promote health and well-being.

In Shiatsu, there are 838 basic shiatsu pressure points, or Atten in Japanese, located on the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones and endocrine glands. Depending on the condition of the body, the therapist applies proper types of pressure. The tighter the muscles are, the lighter the pressure. As the muscles relax, the pressure becomes deeper but is always firm and steady. This triggers the release of hormones and body chemicals necessary to heal, to soothe and to make you mind and body perform optimally. This method of triggering the own healing system of the body does not produce side effects or toxins and is thus a totally healthy way of getting relief from ailments.

Looked at casually from far Shiatsu whole-body charts can be confused with Qi or meridian charts used in Chinese medicine. But Namikoshi Shiatsu practitioners are quick to point out that Namikoshi's style of Shiatsu places emphasis only on regions based on anatomy and physiology rather than on energy channels/pathways/meridians. Shiatsu works the whole body (including doing stretches).

4. Derivative treatments

The last area of difference between Shiatsu and Western massage is that of derivatives. Derivative Shiatsu usually refers to the other current styles of Shiatsu, which have evolved after Namikoshi Shiatsu, such as Meridian Shiatsu, Zen Shiatsu, Tao Shiatsu, Tsubo Shiatsu, Ohashiatsu and Quantum Shiatsu. None of these derivative styles are recognised by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Within Western massage there are many styles and techniques, which focus on particular areas of the body (e.g., deep tissue massage, tendo-muscular massage, scalp massage, etc.). However, Western Massage can be broadly grouped into three camps, sports massage, well-being massage and erotic massage. Sports massage aims to get the athlete in fit shape and ensure superior performance.

Creating a certain type of ambience with candles, colours, incense or music is very important to well-being and erotic massage but almost totally absent in sports massage. The camp of well-being massage displays the widest divergence in different types of derivative forms like aromatherapy, reflexology or deep tissue massage.

Sensuous massage or erotic massage has been a derivative of traditional massage for centuries in all parts of the world but to date there is no sensuous or erotic Shiatsu therapy.
Shiatsu and Western massage do have common ground but differ much in theory, philosophy and practice. However, in spite of the differences, the aim of both systems is the same - a balanced, healthy and happy individual.

People have a hard time coping with the demands of life nowadays. What is Stress?

Contrary to common usage of the term 'stress', stress is not the pressure from the outside- the bitter divorce, the death of a loved one, the mounting pile of bills or the pressing deadlines. These are stressors. Our response to these situations is stress.

Stress is a psychological and physiological response to events that threaten or upset our personal balance in some manner. When danger is sensed, the hypothalamus area of the brain triggers a chemical alarm. The sympathetic nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, called adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol, which race through the bloodstream, preparing us to either flee the scene or hold ground and fight it out. Our heartbeat rate and blood flow to the large muscles increase. This enables us to run faster and fight harder. Blood vessels under the skin constrict to prevent blood loss in case of injury, eye pupils dilate so we can see better or more sharply. Our blood sugar levels jump, giving us extra energy and cutting down reaction time. This automatic reaction to threat or stressors is known as the stress response. When it works properly, the human body's stress response increases a person's ability to perform efficiently under pressure.

However one should not forget that in addition to external pressures and demands much stress is also self-generated. Some internal causes of stress:

Excessive worrying
 Pessimistic attitude
 Overt self-criticism
Unrealistic expectations or beliefs
Low self-esteem
Excessive or repressed anger

Different types of stress

In the modern world, most of the stress we feel is in response to psychological rather than physical threats. People show different symptoms of stress. Some people mostly show physical symptoms, such as headaches, migraines, irregular heartbeats, lower back pain, stomach problems and skin problems. In others we can detect emotional symptoms, such as getting irritated easily, extreme mood swings or depression while some people show stress in their behaviour more easily than others.

It means "finger pressure" in Japanese and that's exactly what shiatsu is: a Japanese type of body work, or massage, which uses the pressure of fingers to relieve aches and pains throughout the body.  Benefits of Shiatsu
 The origins of shiatsu go back at least 5,000 years. It originated as a traditional Chinese form of healing called Anma, which came to Japan and began to develop into something more unique. In the 20th century the word shiatsu was coined, and by the mid 1950s the government in Japan officially recognized it as a legitimate type of therapy.

 Like acupuncture, this type of bodywork or massage is carried out by concentrating on the body's system of Chinese meridians, or specific pressure points. When pressure is applied along these very specific meridian lines, it is thought that the body is able to realign its natural qi, or energy flows.
 People who practice shiatsu use these pressure techniques combined with assisted stretching to stimulate the lymphatic system and help the blood flow circulation throughout the body. It is thought that by doing this the body will eventually release built-up toxins, and that the muscles will get rid of accumulated tension.

 Proponents of this age-old technique believe this release can help the body heal itself overall through building up its hormonal and immune systems, which in turn have a positive effect on the nervous system.  How Does Shiatsu Work?
 Experiencing shiatsu is as easy as finding a qualified practitioner, and there are many. Once you find someone you like, he or she will ask you questions about your general health, carry out an examination which usually includes looking at your tongue and listening to your voice, and then perform several techniques to improve the flow of energy around your body.

 Each treatment lasts usually around one hour, and will include the practitioner applying pressure to various parts of your body using his or her hands, thumbs, fingers, palms, knees, feet, elbows etc, and also carrying out some assisted-stretching techniques. There are several different schools of shiatsu and the treatment you have will be tailored to suit the school, which include:
 Namikoshi Shiatsu. Uses rubbing and pressing techniques to aid in healing. Developed by one Mr Tokujiro Namikoshi, who supposedly cured his mother's rheumatism and became a known and gifted healer at the ripe old age of 10. It uses pressure to rid cells of toxins, concentrating on both deep and superficial tissues. It is thought that repeated pressing generates electrical charges which help to stimulate energy levels, and get rid of adhesions that have held the body back.
 Zen Shiatsu. Most popular kind of shiatsu, which concentrates on the entire body and sometimes requires abdominal massage. Developed by Shizuto Masanuga, a psychologist and shiatsu practitioner who died in 1981. Lifestyle and dietary advice may be given. The practitioner will listen to how the body responds to certain pressing, which will dictate the steps he or she will take next. The recipient usually lies on a futon or mat on the floor, and no massage oils are used.
 Tsubo Therapy. Not as popular in the States as it is in Japan, this was developed by Katsusuke Serizawa and concentrates on tsubo, or acupressure points. It is thought that the skin has an electrical resistance which changes over specific tsubo points, so a tsubo therapist will use a variety of techniques to prove this, including needles and electrical devices as well as plain old massage. Acupressure shiatsu is largely thought of as a derivative of Serizawa's techniques.
 Please note that shiatsu is not for everyone. People with certain skin rashes, who have just had surgery or who are prone to blood clots should refrain from having it. Pregnant women, people with osteoporosis, and those who have just had chemotherapy or radiotherapy should consult their doctor first. And use common sense: avoid having it if you have large bruises, have just had a hernia operation or an open fracture etc.

 Does it Really Work?
 Proponents of shiatsu believe it can "cure" everything from constipation to insomnia to back pain, and say it also works well on depression, sports injuries, poor digestion, anxiety, stress and fatigue and other muscle pain. Others say it works primarily as a relaxation technique, and while it certainly can temporarily relieve pain - especially that associated with muscle stiffness because of its massage element - it cannot actually help the body heal itself.

 "Ordinary massage and the legitimate practice of massage therapy can help people feel better. However, many practitioners falsely claim to do much more, and the agencies that oversee the educational and licensing systems display no evidence of concern about this," writes Dr Stephen Barrett on his Quackwatch website, which is advertised as "Your Guide to Quackery, Health Fraud and Intelligent Decisions."

 "I've been astounded over the years at the outlandish claims made by many body workers. It's wonderful to get a great massage. It does increase circulation, gives temporary relief to pain, provides a sense of well being, and promotes relaxation, but I don't know of anything (other than the blues) that it has ever cured. "

 "People need to realize that just because it is a wonderful pleasure that does not make it good medicine."

 If you want to try shiatsu yourself, make sure you get a trained practitioner in a safe and clean environment. But remember that this type of complementary therapy should not be intended to replace conventional medicine, and that if a shiatsu practitioner tries to diagnose a specific health problem or prescribe medicine, they are breaking the law. What is shiatsu? Upon hearing the word shiatsu many people ask "what is that?" and there are usually many varied answers. Depending on whom you ask and what school or style of bodywork they trained at you will usually be given some story about a Japanese master or told about points from acupuncture, finger pressure or a load of Chinese medicine stuff.

Shiatsu:When we take this back to its primal origins essentially it is all about touch. From the moment that the single cell divides the growing human body is shaped by the pressures imposed upon it. The pressure from the amniotic fluid and from the movement of the mother's body denotes whether the cells develop into muscle, bone ligament or tendon.

In its most basic and primal form Shiatsu is all about applying careful and considered pressure to the body with a great deal of focus on intention. When the pressure is careful and considered this bypasses the para-sympathetic nervous system, which controls the fight flight mechanism and pain responses of the body. Instead of retreating away from the touch the body responds and accepts the touch, allowing it to move deeper and deeper into the body. By bypassing the parasympathetic nervous system, we are able to gain access to the ortho-sympathetic nervous system which controls the unconscious functions of the body such as our breathing pattern, our organ rhythm and function, peristalsis within the digestive tract and to some degree our heartbeat.

Shiatsu: This considered pressure mimics the early developmental pressure which takes the body into a deeply receptive state and allows restrictions within the subconscious function to be released. This helps to change breeding patterns and organ functional rhythm releasing trapped debris in toxins within the body resulting in improved health and well-being.

There are often deep rooted, postural and behaviour patterns associated with these unconscious functions and when there is change at this unconscious level there is often a dramatic change in our lifestyle and behaviour. Many people in modern society have lost this simple connection with their body often taking drugs that block pain or never stopping to really notice that they have a body and to really connect with it. Re- connection can sometimes be as simple as paying attention to our breathing, it is very hard to consciously breathe and perform a thought process at the same time.
It is our need for loving and caring touch and the stimulation, support and growth that, this brings that make us uniquely human. Shiatsu is the ability to touch deeply into this unconscious level to encourage and stimulate change and growth from within.

The Japanese character for Shiatsu is also used for human being and shows one person leaning on another or one supporting another, depending on your perspective at that time. After all are we not here to love and support those around us? What could possibly make us more human than that?

Shiatsu has become a very common word in the Western world nowadays. You see this word quite often in health, lifestyle, and alternative medicine magazines all over the world from Helsinki to Beijing. On the Internet, there is much information about Shiatsu. There are different approaches and schools of Shiatsu. Sometimes they even seem to contradict each other. This can be very confusing for the layman, who just wants to be healthy and feel better.

What really is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of Japanese therapeutic massage developed in Japan, which has spread worldwide. The 1915 Japanese book, Shiatsu Ryöhö written by Tenpaku Tamai is probably the first written reference to modern Shiatsu. However, Tokujiro Namikoshi's (1905-2000) followers consider him to be the founder of Shiatsu.

Shiatsu regulates your nervous system and promotes natural healing by stimulating chemical responses within your body. The therapeutic effect comes from the fact that Shiatsu triggers the release of hormones and body chemicals necessary to heal, to soothe, and to make your mind and body perform optimally.

Shiatsu has been given official recognition by the EU Parliament also. It is one of eight non-conventional, complementary medicine disciplines mentioned in the Collins Report, which was adopted by the European Parliament in May 1997 (see references).

There are 838 basic shiatsu pressure points, called Atten in Japanese. These points can be found on the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones, and endocrine glands. As the therapy progresses, the therapist senses the condition of the body, and applies suitable types of pressure. The basis rule is that, tighter the muscles are, the lighter the pressure. As the muscles relax, the pressure becomes deeper but it is always firm and steady. Knuckles, fists, elbows, and knees are never used during a Namikoshi Shiatsu Treatment as they lack the required sensitivity.

Is Shiatsu any different from massage?
To understand Shiatsu better, we could compare it to Western massage. Both are based on anatomy and physiology. However, there are differences in the philosophy and the technique used by the therapist. Shiatsu technique uses finger and palm pressure but no rubbing, while western massage uses a rubbing motion. No oil or lotion is ever used during a Shiatsu treatment, as there is no rubbing in Shiatsu.

The main difference between Namikoshi Shiatsu and other modern Western forms of bodywork, known as massage, is in the manner of applying pressure. In Shiatsu it is deep sensitive pressure, using hands, thumbs, and fingers. Western Massage, on the other hand, uses movements along the body surface also using herbs and oil as a lubricant.

Taking part in Shiatsu treatment is very easy for everybody. In Shiatsu taking off your clothes is not necessary. In traditional Western Massage, which is usually performed on bare skin with oils or lotions, you need to partially or fully disrobe.
