Pregnancy massage therapy:

Before any massage therapy can be administered it may be advisable for pregnant clients to obtain a doctors clearance for any therapy received. Massage therapy can increase circulation flow which may cause dizziness and add to any existing morning sickness or other health conditions. If the client is still in the first trimester it would be important to obtain medical clearance before commencing any treatment so her doctor is aware of the treatment she will be receiving.

If the client is still very early in her pregnancy it is allowable to have her lay prone however if she doesn't find this comfortable then she may choose to lay on her side with one or two pillows positioned between her knees to keep her pelvis in proper alignment. During the second and third trimesters she will not be able to lay prone so she will need to be positioned on her side with one or two pillows between her knees to keep her pelvis in proper alignment.


Pregnancy massage therapy:

Some common symptoms of pregnancy which can be treated with massage therapy are sacroiliac pain, sciatica and fluid retention. Treatment will only be able to address these problems assuming the doctor has given the all clear to proceed and no other contraindications present themselves.

The symptoms of sacroiliac pain are often caused by traumatic injuries, biomechanical injuries, hormonal changes and inflammatory joint disease. Provided the cause of pain isn't the result of a traumatic injury or inflammatory disease then the symptoms can be treated with massage therapy.

Pregnancy massage therapy:

Before massage therapy is applied a heat pack can be applied to the sacral area to increase circulation, relax muscle tissue and alleviate some of the sacroiliac pain. Massage therapy can be applied to the rest of the back while the heat pack warms the area. Before using any heat the client should always be asked if they want a heat pack to be used as part of the treatment.

Massaging the shoulders and between the shoulder blades can release any muscular tension the client may be carrying due to the increase stress and tension of pregnancy. When the heat pack has been applied for around 15 to 20 minutes it can be removed and a gentle yet firm massage consisting of effleurage, petrissage and friction can be applied to the sacrum and lumber region.

Massage therapy to the abdominal region is strictly contraindicated in the first trimester and so this area will be avoided.

Massaging the upper back, sacrum and lumber region can help alleviate sacroiliac pains, pains in the lumbar region, assist with circulation and help to relax the client. Treatment for sciatica is still required and will follow upper body treatment. Fluid retention will be alleviated during all massage therapy so it is not entirely necessary to target that problem specifically unless it presents itself in a key area. If the fluid retention is too severe then massage therapy is contraindicated and it is best the client speaks to her doctor about it before continuing with treatment. If severe fluid retention is isolated to one location then contraindication is specified to that area alone or as recommended by her doctor.

Pregnancy massage therapy:

Treatment for sciatica involves manipulating trigger points in the quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. Massage to the rest of the legs can also correct any muscle imbalances that may be present which can affect the alignment of the pelvis and lumbar region. In addition to the musculo-skeletal benefits provided by leg massage; circulation will be improved in the legs and throughout the rest of the body.

While the client is receiving treatment Aromatherapy can be utilised to help her relax by using essential oils in an evaporative burner and with her permission, through a massage oil.

Pregnancy massage therapy:

In the evaporative burner the ideal blend would be a combination of lavender and lemon essential oils to help with relaxation and relieve any nausea. These oils can also be used in the massage carrier oil at low concentration of around 1%. Lavender and lemon essential oils used in a carrier oil can help with fluid retention by improving circulation, can help relieve muscular aches and pains and help to create a relaxing environment.

To support the massage treatment, the client can be instructed in ways to help her while at home, at work or simply while she is out and about. This would constitute proper posture while sitting, laying and performing day to day duties. Back Massage - What A Relief!

After a long week at work wouldn't it be nice to get a good back massage-or to be able to give one to your spouse or significant other?  Before you get started you might want some instruction on how to make this a great massage; one that will leave the recipient relaxed and comfortable rather than tired and tense.  A massage that is not done correctly can actually cause even more pain than the person had before the massage.  Giving a back massage is not difficult but it does take a little bit of know-how.

A Few Pointers:

For a general massage of the back, have the person lay on their stomach and sit by their head.  Their head should be turned to the side and their arms should be resting at their sides.  With your fingers just below the neck, slide your hands slowly down both sides of the back bone and then back up the sides of the body, and out over the shoulders.  For the next part of the back massage, begin at the base of the neck again and rub in circular motions out toward the shoulders.  With your thumbs make a rolling motion all over the bottom of the neck and top of the back to finish the job.
Lower Back

The lower back is the one most commonly injured and sore and benefits greatly from a back massage.  Using your pinky and index finger on each hand, and sitting to the side of the recipient move your fingers along either side of the spine, moving one hand over the other in small rhythmic movements.  For the next step of the back massage, you should start at the base of the spine, and using massage oil, make movements up the spine and down the sides of the body.  Then, after you have done this with the oil, make rough rubbing motions from the bottom of the spine up to the rib cage. Finally for the last step of the back massage, make big gliding motions over the spine and lower back and then to the hips which should also be given a deep massage with large circular motions.

Upper Back

The upper back massage is accomplished by putting the recipients arm behind their back with the elbow bent, and one had cupped on the shoulder blade while the other hand massages around the shoulder blade in upward motions.

Remember

When you are giving any massage, you should be careful not to rub too hard on the backbone, or just rub to the sides of it.   All movements in the back massage should be gentle and not too fast even when you are moving from one part of the body to another.  You should also make sure that the recipient has adequate body support with pillows under the upper chest, the ankles, and under the breasts (for women.)  Then your back massage should be a great success.

Make sure the pillow is in right place; under the chest. Fold some cloth and keep it under your partners head to keep their neck in line with the body. The same can be done under your partners ankles. Cover the lower pants of your partner with a cloth so that it doesn't get stained with the oil. Now take some oil in hand and rub it in both hands, it would make it warm. start spreading it on your partners back, concentrate more on the neck are. [Back massage]


Keep your hands one upon another and start moving them on your partners back in small circles, without much pressure, this is called palm circling. This should be done from waist to neck. Close your hands into fist and slowly star rubbing the back with them till shoulders. Skip the spine and remember not to apply pressure on it. Another type of stroke, the muscle lifting can be done by holding flesh loosely with one hand and subsequently rubbing its hind are with another hand. Make the session shorter - there's no need to tax the body. The therapeutic benefits are still there and with a shorter session, you won't be overdoing what they might need or appreciate.

Of course there are always exceptions. I've been working with a client for almost 10 years. She's 94 years young and has been doing yoga for over 50 years. She has the physicality of a 60 year old (one who would be in excellent shape). For longer than I've known her, she's had a massage session and a reflexology session on alternating weeks. She eats well and has never indulged in sweets or desserts.

As with many alternative massage therapies, there is no actual proof that reflexology works but many clinical trials have shown that it can be of benefit in treating all sorts of conditions and has been shown to be effective when dealing with back pain.  During a treatment the practitioner will work the entire surface of both the feet paying particular attention to tender or congested (known as gritty) areas as these represent parts of your body which are out of balance and painful. In some cases the hands will be treated but usually only in the case of extremely tender feet or missing limbs, this is because the surface area of the feet is greater therefore more effective. The treatment should not feel unpleasant as it is similar to a massage therapy and you should feel relaxed during and after the procedure, the pressure applied is not painful and is firm enough to be tolerated by those of us who are ticklish. There are no after effects apart from feeling relaxed and you will probably enjoy a good nights' sleep. Reflexology improves body circulation and cleanses the system from impurities and toxins so it is advisable to drink plenty of water afterwards to help expel them from your system.

Although reflexology is an alternative massage therapy, it is amongst one of the heavyweights in terms of reputation and effectiveness and many of us with varying conditions, including back pain, would no doubt benefit from one or more sessions.

6. To finish your self-massage and to seal the goodness in, do a foot sweep of each feet and cup your fingers over the top of each foot

There is common ground between Shiatsu and Western massage. Both systems are wonderful ways of relieving stress and promoting health and they focus on the body of the person to be treated. Further, neither system uses any sophisticated electronic or mechanical machinery in the diagnosis or implementation of treatment. The third common ground is that both Shiatsu and massage are classified in most of the Western World to remain outside the bastion of Western medicine, which is based on current Western mainstream scientific tradition. Outside Japan both Shiatsu and Western massage share the outfields of non-traditional treatment or alternative medicine with Healing, Reiki, Hypnosis or Crystal Healing.

Shiatsu practitioners tend to distance themselves from the bandwagon of alternative treatment approaches like Reiki or faith healing by demonstrating their usage of anatomy, physiology and pathology in the same vein as Western medicine. This could be one of the explanations for the great popularity of Shiatsu in the West as it bridges the West and the East.

When we explore the differences between Shiatsu and Western massage, we notice four main differences.

The historical evolution of the treatments.

Body massage might be one of the oldest forms of medical care known to man. Though we may not know what the ancient Egyptian practitioners actually believed in, Egyptian tomb paintings show people being massaged. A Chinese book from 2,700 B.C., The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, recommends massage of skin and flesh as the appropriate treatment for many ailments. Ayurveda, the 5000-year old traditional Indian system of medicine, greatly stresses the therapeutic benefits of massage with aromatic oils and spices. Writing in the 8th century BC, Homer of Greece mentions massage being used commonly also for Olympic athletes in the same way as it is used today.

1. The History and Evolution of Shiatsu

Though the earliest modern reference to the term Shiatsu in a publication might be the 1915 Japanese book, Shiatsu Ry�h� written by Tenpaku Tamai, Tokujiro Namikoshi's (1905-2000) followers consider him to be the founder of Shiatsu. His approach was entirely different from the Chinese meridian or Qi-based therapies. Namikoshi at age seven in 1912 independently developed a technique of pressing with his thumbs and palms as he tried to nurse his mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Namikoshi's influence on Shiatsu can be compared to the role of Picasso in art because he not only created an important genre, but also became an inspiration for many other creators of derivative therapies.

Tokujiro Namikoshi opened his first clinic for Shiatsu Therapy in 1925 in Hokkaido using the system that he perfected. In addition to founding in 1940 the first school of Shiatsu Therapy in Tokyo (Now known as the Japan Shiatsu College), Namikoshi was involved with the legal recognition of Shiatsu in Japan, which may account for his emphasis on Western medical theories. Namikoshi achieved fame and successfully treated many high-ranking persons such as the former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida. As his fame spread foreign celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali sought his treatment. Currently in Japan, Namikoshi's system enjoys special legal status. Starting from 1947, after an eight-year clinical investigation period to ascertain which of 300 treatments could be legalised, the Ministry of Health of Japan acknowledged Shiatsu Therapy, as it proved effective. Shiatsu was placed in the same category with Anma and Western Massage in 1955.
In 1964 Shiatsu was acknowledged as a separate therapy on its own in Japan. Everyone practising Shiatsu in Japan should obtain a licence from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Licensing also requires that Shiatsu practitioners study a 2,500-hour educational program of Shiatsu therapy lasting about three years in the universities or colleges authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and pass the national exam.

2. Technique used and ingredients in treatment

The second difference between Shiatsu and Western massage is in technique and in the use of ingredients like oils and spices. Shiatsu technique relies on finger and palm pressure, while western massage uses a rubbing motion. Since shiatsu does not involve rubbing, no oil or lotion is ever used during a treatment.

3. Philosophy of Western Massage and Shiatsu

The third and main difference comes from the philosophy behind Western Massage and Shiatsu.

The principal difference between Shiatsu and other modern Western forms of bodywork, e.g., Swedish massage, is that Shiatsu is a form of holistic healing while modern Western massage is based on conventional Western views of wellness and healing. Western massage usually considers the human body the domain of the masseur while the mind is the domain of psychology and psychiatry. Adapting a holistic approach, Shiatsu regulates the nervous system and promotes natural healing by stimulating chemical responses in the body.

Western massage is based on the idea that muscle tension and improper alignment may cause or worsen physical, mental and internal imbalances. Massage techniques attempt to reduce tension within the body to facilitate the free flow of blood and energy. This in turn makes the major systems of the body (immune, circulatory, nervous, etc.) to be better able to naturally heal disease and promote health and well-being.

In Shiatsu, there are 838 basic shiatsu pressure points, or Atten in Japanese, located on the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones and endocrine glands. Depending on the condition of the body, the therapist applies proper types of pressure. The tighter the muscles are, the lighter the pressure. As the muscles relax, the pressure becomes deeper but is always firm and steady. This triggers the release of hormones and body chemicals necessary to heal, to soothe and to make you mind and body perform optimally. This method of triggering the own healing system of the body does not produce side effects or toxins and is thus a totally healthy way of getting relief from ailments.

Looked at casually from far Shiatsu whole-body charts can be confused with Qi or meridian charts used in Chinese medicine. But Namikoshi Shiatsu practitioners are quick to point out that Namikoshi's style of Shiatsu places emphasis only on regions based on anatomy and physiology rather than on energy channels/pathways/meridians. Shiatsu works the whole body (including doing stretches).

4. Derivative treatments

The last area of difference between Shiatsu and Western massage is that of derivatives. Derivative Shiatsu usually refers to the other current styles of Shiatsu, which have evolved after Namikoshi Shiatsu, such as Meridian Shiatsu, Zen Shiatsu, Tao Shiatsu, Tsubo Shiatsu, Ohashiatsu and Quantum Shiatsu. None of these derivative styles are recognised by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Within Western massage there are many styles and techniques, which focus on particular areas of the body (e.g., deep tissue massage, tendo-muscular massage, scalp massage, etc.). However, Western Massage can be broadly grouped into three camps, sports massage, well-being massage and erotic massage. Sports massage aims to get the athlete in fit shape and ensure superior performance.

Creating a certain type of ambience with candles, colours, incense or music is very important to well-being and erotic massage but almost totally absent in sports massage. The camp of well-being massage displays the widest divergence in different types of derivative forms like aromatherapy, reflexology or deep tissue massage.

Sensuous massage or erotic massage has been a derivative of traditional massage for centuries in all parts of the world but to date there is no sensuous or erotic Shiatsu therapy.
Shiatsu and Western massage do have common ground but differ much in theory, philosophy and practice. However, in spite of the differences, the aim of both systems is the same - a balanced, healthy and happy individual.
